This hand-made, limited-edition volume is created exclusively by the writer herself, using the traditional bookmaking crafts. Featuring images engraved by artist, Kain White, this work is a unique and independent tribute to art and craftsmanship.
As a literary work, Closer than Breathing transcends boundaries. Sutton’s characters inhabit the periphery—they are castaways and exiles, seeking to sustain the inner light in an incredulous world. Harry Oldmeadow, author of Journeys East, writes in the Foreword,
These are stories of luminous epiphanies and dark apprehensions, evanescent intuitions and fugitive glimpses, stories of hope and regret, love and loss and grief, of death and renewal.

The Red Book was lovingly designed and crafted by the author to be the most faithful expression of her work. Its anatomical theme is realised in both its visual and tactile qualities. The covers are quarter-bound in carmine leather, blocked in white, with sides of Awagami Extra Thick kozo washi, burnished by hand. The endpapers are marbled to resemble vivisected flesh and have been hinged in carmine with exposed linen thread. This series features a hand-coloured text block and hand-sewn Gütermann silk headbands in red and white. The text is hand-set in the classic typeface Bembo with initials and Garamond italic display, and printed on 175 gsm Magnani Revere Book Suede cotton paper in ivory. The internal images are printed from Resingrave blocks, the cover image from a maple block, all designed and engraved by Kain White. Book dimensions: 162mm x 233mm (ISBN 978-0-646-82010-1). All products are in Australian dollars.
